The course was opened in 1991 by the President of Portugal
and was originally designed by Henry Cotton. After Cotton's
death, Peter Dobereiner completed the building of the course.
With the principle that golf courses should be fair tests,
gimmickry has been avoided and the course is notable for its
very large, undulating and immensely speedy greens.
There are several tough holes among the 18, especially the
16th; at 660 yards it is called 'O Gigante'.
THE COURSE: Located east of Portimao, 18 hole, par 72, and

Designed by Frank Pennink in 1972, the course was carved
through the pine forests on the Costa da Caparica, 20 km
south of Lisbon at Aroeira. After the revolution in the
early 70's, the course lay dormant for a decade but is
now back to its best with its trees, water hazards and
many dog-leg holes. The course is an 18 hole, par 72,
and 6040m long. Visitors are welcome.

Once the haunt of an array of deposed European royalty,
this course, designed by Mackenzie Ross, opened in 1945,
swoops and rolls through avenues of pine and eucalyptus
trees. There are 2 courses, an 18 hole, par 69 at 5210m
and a 9 hole, par 33, at 2350m. Visitors must book in
advance.

OPORTO GOLF CLUB

This is the oldest golf club in Portugal; 1890, and one of
the oldest in Europe. It was founded by a group of wine
shippers and moved to its present site in 1900. The course
has been changed on various occassions over the years,
most notably in the 1950's by Mackenzie Ross. It is now
an 18 hole par 71, at 5668m long. Visitors must book in
advance.

PALMARES GOLF CLUB

Designed by Frank Pennink and opened in 1975, the course
has two separate styles, both links and parkland for this
18 hole, par 71, at 5961m long. The first hole drifts down
a long hill and along the beach in typical links style.
Moving inland, the holes provide challenge as they run up
and down the undulating hills. Visitors must book for play.

The club is at the center of a residential development near
the fishing village of Salema, west of Lagos. The course
was built in 1987 on hilly terrain with narrow fairways,
deep ravines, steep slopes and double tiered plateau greens.
Some recent modifications have been made to the 18 hole par
72 course inorder to ease the difficulty of play. It is now
5888m long and the club welcomes visitors.

The Penina Club/Resort was designed by Henry Cotton, who
planted thousands of trees on the flat and swampy terrain.
With the many huge trees, the courses can be changed to set
up various lengths and difficulty. Opened in 1966, the club
routinely offers two courses, the 18 hole par 73, is 6054m
long and is the Championship course. The 9 hole par 35 is
called the Monchique and is 2842m long. Penina is a great
test for golfers of all levels. Hotel residents have priority
at The Penina Club and visitors must book in advance.

Built on the 2000 acre Quinta do Lago estate in 1974, the
club has four 9 hole courses where fairways meander between
umbrella pine trees and many water hazards make the course
testy but not extremely difficult. The courses are well
maintained with lush turf and superb greens.

#2 par 37, 3172m, #3 par 36, 2945m, and #4 par 35 at 2697m.

San Lorenzo is an attractive and demanding 18 hole par 72

This Trent Jones creation opened in 1979, offers an 18 hole,
par 72 , 5874m links style course. Narrow fairways scattered
with many bunkers and very small greens add to the natural
hazards of sand dunes, scrub and pine trees. Sited on the
Troia peninsula south of Setbul, this is a popular course
and visitors must book in advance.

One of the senior courses of the Algarve area southwest of
Almansil, it was designed by Henry Cotton and opened in
1968. There are 3 loops of 9 holes that run through
undulating terrain with pine trees and some beach area.
The course has been encroached by many villas and apartments
which now line the edges of the course.

par 36, 2753m and Green, 9 hole par 35, 2532m.

VILAMOURA GOLF CLUB

Sited just west of Faro, the courses of Vilamoura were
opened in 1969. The original course was designed by Frank
Pennink has undulating fairways and has characteristics of a
Surrey type course. Vilamoura 1 is an 18 hole par 72, and
5995m long. The second Vilamoura course was formerly called
the Dom Pedro was also designed by Pennink but modified by
Trent Jones. More open than the first course, Vilamoura 2
is an 18 hole par 72, 5866m long.
The third course opened in 1991 and was designed by Joseph
Lee. Vilamoura three has 27 holes pinhal 2935m, lago is
2953m, and marina is 3180m. Noted for its generous fairways
the Vilamoura three has heavy bunkering and water on eight
of the holes. Visitors must book in advance.
