Though golf club technology has made giant leaps
through the course of history, changes in the actual materials
used by the manufacturers have been few and far between. Cleveland
Golf began producing golf clubs from a revolutionary material
in 2004 when they came out with the CG10 wedges. These wedges
were, and still are, widely hailed as the best feeling wedges
in golf. (See "Editor's Choice" Golf Digest, Feb. 2005)
The last time there was a change this significant,
they started making woods out of metal.
CG10 WEDGES >> THE METAL:
Our goal was to find or create a material that would damp vibration
in an unprecedented fashion and could be readily manipulated and
engineered for performance. In fall of 2003 we created the first
wedges made from light density steel. Since then we have added
Black Pearl wedges as well as the CG1's, CG2's and the new
CG4's to Cleveland Golfs line of CMM brand clubs.

This new metal, while not a composite, is infused
with 17 times more carbon than traditional 8620 and 1020 steels.
Using a process unique to the CMM material, microscopic carbon
spheres are infused within the molecular structure of the metal.
This creates a matrix that is 10% less dense than ordinary steel
yet it maintains the hardness and manipulation properties of cast
or forged carbon steel. These density relieving spheres within
the CMM metal also dramatically damp vibration offering a pure,
soft feel never before achieved in any golf club. Needless to
say, Cleveland Golf has a patent pending for golf clubs made of
this breakthrough material.
CG10 WEDGES >> THE PERFORMANCE:
The CG10 wedge has been widely hailed as the best feeling wedge
Cleveland Golf has ever built. And thats saying something.
The feel is unmistakable. In blind tests on tours worldwide, the
CG10 wedge was overwhelmingly preferred for its soft, pure feel
and was easily distinguished from other wedges. Even the sound
at impact is sufficiently different from other wedges, adding
to the distinct feel of the CMM metal. Extensive player and robot
testing has shown that, while the CG10 wedge produced similar
spin to other Cleveland wedges with soft cover tour balls, it
dramatically increased spin on hard cover distance balls. This
translates into consistency for the low-handicapped player, and
added performance for those seeking spin from a distance ball.
CG10 WEDGES >> THE DESIGN:
With its light density properties, CMM metal affords Cleveland
Golf club designers an unprecedented degree of design freedom.
This freedom enabled the Cleveland design team to create a wedge
that, while classic in appearance, has subtle design refinements
that add to the unprecedented performance of the CG10 wedge. Although
overall head weights are comparable to past Cleveland wedge series,
the CG10 wedge features more weight positioned within critical
areas to improve feel and performance without sacrificing traditional
shape. Weight has also been moved to high stress areas, further
improving feel, even on miss-hits.
Ultimately, more mass has been placed directly behind
the impact area and lower in the head thus giving the CG10 wedge
a solid, "muscle-back" appearance.

What's the one thing that all golfers agree on? Glare hurts.
Nobody wants to be blinded by the sun as it's reflected off their
wedge. To combat this, Cleveland Golf has developed an advanced
surface coating process that drastically reduces blinding glare
while helping the club maintain its soft feel, bendability and
resistance to rust.
CG10 BLACK PEARL WEDGES >> MULTI-LAYERED
MICRO-COATING TECHNOLOGY:
Black Pearl wedges feature a proprietary micro-coating thats
formed using an advanced, multi-stage process. It starts with
a hand-ground and polished CMM CG10 clubhead. Next, using
a precise electroplating process, two layers of soft nickel (Ni)
are deposited onto the surface. The clubhead is then inspected
and polished to a glare-reducing satin finish. The second primary
layer is electrically deposited as a thin, yet durable layer of
chromium (Cr).
This provides a corrosion-resistant layer to the club while highlighting
the satin finish. The final step to this techno-logically advanced
finish is a tertiary outer coating. Through an advanced coating
process, microscopic particles of a proprietary compound are first
vaporized and then condensed onto the clubhead. The end result
of this time-intensive process is a rich, glare-reducing finish
with enhanced corrosion resistance and a softer feel when compared
to other dark metal finishes.
